Top High Schools that Don’t Use Grades or Test Scores to Determine Admission

The high schools listed below have either a Limited Unscreened or Educational Option (Ed Opt) admissions method, making them ideal choices for students whose 7th grade test scores and/or grades are not high enough to meet screened schools’ admissions standards.  Limited Unscreened schools use a lottery system to determine who is accepted to the school, giving preference to students who attend an information session or open house.  Ed Opt schools accept half of their students using grades and test scores and the other half through a lottery.

The schools below are ranked by college readiness rates, from highest to lowest.  By the Department of Education’s definition, to be college ready, students must have graduated with a Regents Diploma and have earned a 75 on their math and English regents, a 480 on each section of the SAT, or passed CUNY’s placement exams.

This list is not an endorsement of any school.
