Hi Friends –

I hope everyone is ready to ask a ton of questions and gather a lot of information at the high school fair this weekend!  I have my floor-by-floor plan printed and ready to go.  Hope to see lots of you there.

What You Should Be Doing Now:
 
Keep Up the Good (Hard) Work!
1. Research lots of high schools (we’re still at the point where you should have an open mind and be ready to learn about as many schools as possible – talk to me if you need recommendations).
2. Visit schools and go to fairs – there’s nothing like seeing a school’s physical space in person, testing the commute, and talking to current students and faculty.  I took the ferry to the New York Harbor School this week – an illuminating (and beautiful) experience!
3. Prepare for the SHSAT, TACHS and other tests. (I know everyone spent the past week doing scrambled paragraphs before bed, right??)
4. Get ready for school auditions – memorize monologues, prepare portfolios, buy ballet slippers (if you need more info about audition schools, check out my blog).

Keep it up!  I wish this process was less complicated, but it’s worth the work, I promise!

Manage Stress

As you’ve probably noticed, this applying to high school thing can be stressful.  This is a big moment for 8th graders – most are just beginning to realize that they won’t be in the same school as their friends next year, they’re overwhelmed by the number of possibilities presented to them in the high school guide (not to mention options outside of public school), and they and have no idea where they’ll be or what they’ll be doing this time next year.  They are terrified that no school will accept them (no matter how qualified they are) and some are starting to regret choices they’ve made in the past (even if it’s not motivating them to make better decisions right now).  At the same time, they’re excited to start this next big chapter in their lives and are eager to have significant input in to deciding where they’ll go to high school.

And parents don’t have it much better!  You are balancing your real job with research, school visits, and nagging your child.  And I’m sure many of you are worried, too, that this won’t work out and that your family won’t have a great option for high school.
This combination of parent-child stress can be disastrous for family relations.  PLEASE take some time this week (and every week) to really enjoy and laugh with your children, tell them that you love them, find a way to boost their confidence, and talk about or do something that has nothing to do with high school.
And if you need someone to remind YOU that this is all going to be ok, call me!
 

High School Spotlight: Frank Sinatra School of the Arts
Frank Sinatra is a school that takes pride in offering rigorous, high quality instruction in both the arts and academics.  Located in a brand new building in Long Island City, Frank Sinatra offers studio majors in dance, drama, film & media, fine arts, instrumental music and vocal music.  The school also offers multiple Advanced Placement courses (about a quarter of students earn college credit from AP or College Now courses while at FSSA) and 97% of students earn a Regents diploma with an arts endorsement in 4 years.  Students must audition for admission to Frank Sinatra.  For more information about audition requirements for FSSA and other arts schools, please see my audition guide.
